I just finished sorting boxes full of photos (as you said, putting emotions aside) into 4 boxes, one for each son. It was so much fun to see our family history in disjointed frames—and so heart wrenching to think of all that has passed, never to be recovered. I filled a big photo album for each son and am looking forward to passing them along.
What a gift to each of your boys, Michele. Even in their midst we know those days are fleeting, but OH OH OH, that word "passed". Tears at a mama's heart!
I wish I had time to do this very thing right now before we move into a smaller house. But it’s all spinning too quickly. Thanks for setting a doable example!🥰
Such a challenge to live now AND inhabit the past for all the weeks it takes to go through those pics! Thinking of you in this season of yours with love, Kara.
My sister gave me and my siblings a family history photo album back when Creative Memories was a thing. She included photos, letters, many originally in German, from the family lines of all four of our grandparents. It was the best gift I’ve ever received. And, also with Creative Memories, I created a photo album for each of my children when they graduated from high school with one open facing page for each year of their lives to that point. Now , however, we have thousands of photos in boxes and several thousand more on our phones from the 20 years since then😳. Thanks for sharing your system!
I have been working with some ladies who struggle with the past pics, due to trauma. I went through that myself at one point. We work through a process to get those pictures out where they need to be. When the memories also hurt, please don’t hide those pics in a box in the spare room. Work through it as other people may truly value them. 💙
Cheryl, I love this. One of the first things I did when I retired was to go through the hundreds of boxes of photos. Since we have 10 kids, you can imagine how many boxes. I bought a little photo scanner and digitized all of them. Then I did like you and sorted them by the various ways. At the end, I got large capacity thumb drives for each of my children and gave them complete copies of the photos. And then for each one gave them their own box of physical photos.

Such treasured gifts! And that one page a year sounds just right. Digital capabilities have changed the landscape!
Beautiful, beautiful gifts! Trying to hold past in tandem with present is daunting, isn’t it?
And oops! Looking forward to giving someone a free copy of “Routed to Heaven!” I highly recommend Willow’s book as well!
Yes! Thank you!

Something how certain shots can rouse old pain in an instant, isn’t it? I couldn’t agree more, Julie.

Such a huge job, but so rewarding.
For all 10 of them! Oh my! What a gift of love.🧡I can’t even think about thumb drives or scanning yet!
